I'm pretty sure most of us have heard this expression, "too heavenly minded, no earthly good." The other Sunday my pastor used it in his message. Some say you don't want to be so heavenly minded that you're no earthly good. Of course, then there is the other end of the spectrum, too earthly minded you're no heavenly good.

I happen to believe that a Christian should be completely heavenly minded so they can be completely earthly good. Who was more heavenly minded than Jesus? Who has ever done more earthly good than Jesus?

If we are completely heavenly minded than God is free to use us to fulfill His good plans here on earth. The problem is when we throw a spanner in the works by not being completely heavenly minded. The reason we are not producing "good" here on earth is not because we are too heavenly minded, but rather when we are too fleshly minded. When we focus our thoughts, desires, and time on heavenly things it has to produce the good fruits of God in our lives which will in turn bring God's goodness here on earth.

This is actually a Biblical principle that is found in Philippians 4:8 (NIV). "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things." God wants us to be heavenly minded. He wants us to think about things that are pure and true and praiseworthy. If we are honest, the only things that truly have these qualities are things that are heavenly, things that come from God.

Bearing this in mind, I challenge you to spend more time thinking about the things of God. Meditate on those things which are pleasing to Him. Watch and see what happens in your own home when you spend more time being "heavenly mind" and less time being "earthly mind". I have experienced the difference in my own life, in my husband's life and even in my children's lives. When I am focusing on the things of God I am much more peaceful (another Biblical truth), which creates a more healthy atmosphere in my home.
